The European Forum Alpbach application platform is open between 15 March 2022, 12:00 pm CET and 13 April 2022, 12:50 pm CET.
You need to apply for a scholarship awarded by the European Forum Alpbach via our online application platform. Please read the requirements carefully in order to make sure to submit a complete application. Incomplete applications or applications that reach us via email will not be accepted. Late submission of missing documents will also not be considered.
Please note there are special application procedures for Austrian, German, Chinese and Taiwanese nationals. If you hold one of these passports, you cannot apply through the European Forum Alpbach online platform. More information will follow soon.
Scholarships for the European Forum Alpbach 2022 cover your participation fee, accomodation and a daily allowance.
Travel costs to and from Alpbach have to be covered by yourself. Onsite, you will receive a daily allowance that partially covers your food expenses.
No. Scholarships for the European Forum Alpbach 2022 are only available for first-time scholarship holders. This means that you haven't been granted an onsite scholarship before. If you have already attended the European Forum Alpbach onsite as a scholarship holder and wish to return, you may apply for a seminar assistant position. The call for applications will be shared on 10 March 2022 here: https://www.alpbach.org/en/.
Yes. If you have attended the European Forum Alpbach 2020 or 2021 as an e-scholar, you may apply for a scholarship for the European Forum Alpbach 2022, provided that you fulfill the general requirements.
Documents to be uploaded:
(1) Proof of your English B2 level as stated in section "English proficiency",
(2) Latest diploma with transcript of records (in English, German or French. Please provide a translation of your diploma if it isn't written in one of these languages. The translation does not need to be certified).
Furthermore, you will need to fill in your CV details and state your motivation to attend the EFA22. Please prepare your motivational statement as stated in section "Application process" on 2022.alpbach.org/scholarship before starting to fill in your application form.
Yes, if the day when you turn 30 is after 2 September 2022. This means: If you turn 30 on 2 September or later, you can apply. However, if your birthday is on 2 September or before you will not be able to apply for a scholarship.
Yes, if you turn 18 before or on 21 August 2022. However, if your birthday is after 21 August 2022 you cannot apply for a scholarship.

Each application is checked for formal criteria. Applications fulfilling these criteria will be passed on to the next round where they are anonymized and subsequently reviewed and rated by two members of a selection committee and ranked based on the average of the two ratings. Based on the jury ratings, the European Forum Alpbach finalizes the selection of candidates, taking into consideration a fair regional and academic distribution of candidates. Our aim is to invite a mix of talented people across all world regions and disciplines to Alpbach. Austrian Clubs and Initiative groups have their own selection process and criteria. Yes. Your scholarship will be final only after a confirmation from you. You need to accept or decline your scholarship within ten days after receiving our acceptance email.
Once you are selected for a scholarship at the efa22, you will receive a scholarship offer along with the terms and conditions.
Scholarships for the European Forum Alpbach are made possible through sponsorship, grants and donations. Your sponsor will be communicated to you before the #efa22.
Nationals of EU member states, the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland do not require a visa for entering the Republic of Austria. All other nationals require a visa in order to enter the Schengen Area or the Austrian territory. As a general rule, the passport must be valid at least three months beyond the planned date of departure from the Schengen area. Accommodation in Alpbach will be booked by the European Forum Alpbach.
The Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs supports us and will inform the nearest Austrian consulate or a consulate with representation for Austria of your visa application. Every Austrian consulate will issue your visa free of charge. However, we can only assure that this is the case when applying at Austrian consulates directly. If you are applying at the consulate of another member of the Schengen area, we cannot guarantee that your files are handled free of charge.
No, please do so yourself for the period of your stay in Alpbach with two additional days for traveling between your hometown and Alpbach.
Coming to Alpbach by public transport is easy. There are bus services from the train stations Wörgl, Jenbach and Brixlegg to Alpbach. The closest airports to Alpbach are Munich, Innsbruck and Vienna Airports. From there, you can easily take a train to one of the above-mentioned stations. Note that all relevant information about public transport will be updated shortly before the start of the European Forum Alpbach.
All scholarship holders will attend a scientific and an artistic/practical seminar of their choice. Further information on the seminars at the #efa22 will be shared with selected applicants in due time.
Alpbach is a mountain village where the weather is very changeable even in the summer. Do not forget to bring warm clothes and especially weatherproof footwear and rain jackets with you! Please bear in mind that the roads in Alpbach are steep, so flat-heeled shoes are advisable. The dress code ranges from casual to smart casual. If you are unsure about how to dress, have a look at the photos of past events.
If you consider participating in one of the hikes offered, please bring warm clothes and appropriate shoes for hiking (trekking shoes or at least adequate sneakers). Participation is at your own risk.
As the European Forum Alpbach is a Green Meeting, we strongly encourage you to bring your own refillable water bottle. You will need it in particular during the Alpbach Seminars.
For the Alpbach Seminars, please bring your own laptop.
Make sure to bring enough money for the first week in Alpbach! Should you have been awarded a full scholarship, you will only receive the board allowance after a few days in Alpbach. Please make sure to have enough cash (or a debit card that allows you to withdraw cash in Austria) on you to be able to pay for any expenses you might encounter on the first week.
Alpbach has many restaurants and places to eat. In some hotels and restaurants, special student meals are offered. You will find detailed information on this in Alpbach. There is a supermarket on the left-hand side of the main street as you enter the village where you can buy products of daily necessity. In some cases, your accommodation also includes breakfast.
